About the Item

Young Sienese, Noblewoman, and Apothecary in Medieval Italian Dress This captivating set of three hand-colored costume prints offers a vibrant glimpse into the fashion and social roles of late medieval Italy. Each figure is presented in profile, gracefully walking or posed in action, emphasizing both the individuality of their attire and the role they represent within Sienese or broader Italian society. Their richly detailed garments and poised stances make this a compelling and decorative set for collectors of historical costume prints. Plate No.52 features a “Jeune Sinnois” (Young Sienese Man) in an elegant, short tunic lined with fur and patterned with fine vertical stripes, evoking the style worn by youthful nobility or courtiers. His legs are clothed in pale green hose, and the orange-gold of his doublet adds a warm contrast to the icy blues of the tunic. He walks forward with an air of confidence and ease, exuding aristocratic nonchalance and refinement. Plate No.53 portrays a “Jeune Femme” (Young Woman), likely of noble or wealthy background. Her elaborate attire consists of a green and ivory gown with gold trimming and luxurious detailing, including fitted red velvet sleeves and a trailing train. She carries a palm frond—a symbol often associated with virtue or a ceremonial procession—and her carefully styled hair and headpiece further suggest her high status. The figure’s graceful bearing and richly symbolic attire make this plate a standout depiction of female courtly fashion. Plate No.54 is labeled “Apothicaire” (Apothecary), capturing a learned and practical profession vital to medieval communities. He is shown mid-action, holding a ladle and a mixing bowl, perhaps in the act of preparing a medicinal concoction. His attire is functional yet refined: a long blue robe with gold-cuffed sleeves, paired with a voluminous red hood and a fur-lined mantle draped across one shoulder. His purposeful movement and the clear reference to his work provide an engaging contrast to the more ceremonial poses of the previous figures. Together, these prints encapsulate a rich visual narrative—from youthful elegance and feminine grace to practical intellect—making the set ideal for those interested in the breadth of medieval Italian society. Condition: The prints are in very good condition. Light foxing is visible on the margins, with the central figures remaining clean and undamaged. The coloring is fresh and well-preserved. Framing Tips: Present these prints in a row with ample white matting between them to let each character stand out. Use a soft cream or parchment-colored mount and consider a satin black or dark cherry wood frame to bring out the contrast in colors. For a subtle gallery-style look, opt for a floated presentation to highlight the trimmed edges. Museum-grade UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the sharpness of the hand-applied colors.
