About the Item

An original 18th-century mixed media piece titled "Saving of Moses from the Water." This remarkable panel features silkwork and stumpwork embroidery on a silk background, enhanced with additional watercolor painting. It is one of a pair of silkwork embroideries depicting Biblical scenes from the Old Testament available for purchase (refer to JZ-238). The panel illustrates the Finding of Moses from the Book of Exodus, showcasing the Pharaoh's daughter discovering the infant Moses among the bulrushes along the banks of the Nile. The embroidery incorporates various skilled techniques, including chenille raised or stumpwork for the tree foliage and exquisite detailing in the figures' garments. The use of watercolor adds depth to the background elements of the scene. Silkwork embroideries were especially popular in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and are now regarded as some of the finest examples of needlework art from that era. Silk or chenille thread was employed to embroider designs onto silk fabric. Due to the intricate nature of the needlework, production was costly and required significant expertise. These silkworks were often created by young genteel women who had honed their skills from childhood samplers. Common subjects included mourning pieces, classical, biblical or literary themes, and floral still lifes. The piece is displayed in an elegant reproduction frame finished in ebony and gold.
