About the Item

Decorate a wall or a staircase with this elegant and colorful antique hunt tapestry with original border. Handwoven in Aubusson, France circa 1880, the rectangular wall decor composition, depicts a landscape scenery with large trees and foliage framing the foreground scene. The focal point of the piece is a small hunting party, with a nobleman on horseback who is followed by four man-servants with eight hunting dogs on leash. In the background, a traveling royal party goes by in a carriage pulled by four horses with two men on horseback beside them, passing a large castle in the distance. The detailed, decorative wall hanging tapestry is in excellent condition, and dressed with a new canvas backing for stability. The large handmade tapestry flaunts a strong color palette that includes neutral green, beige earth, and rich red tones. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacturing in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as "warping" and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. Measures: 89" W x 77" H.

The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th century managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...
