19th Century Turkmen Saddlebag in Tekke Stripe Pattern in Dark Red, Ivory, Brown

The Turkmen saddlebag’s front design consists of wide stripes with geometric design in yellow, black, brown separated by narrow ivory color bands. The Turkmen double saddlebags have a flatwoven (kilim) back in a pale yellow/ivory color. The Tekke rugs from the Turkman tribes of the Central Asia region have become extremely collectible. It is an extremely fine-woven and beautiful tribal creation which is now used as Central Asia nomadic tribal wall art. This complete saddlebag is also known as “khorjin” in Persian, or a double bag set. These bags are renowned for their beautiful colors and design which is the result of using fine wool for both pile and the foundation of the rugs and the use of organic vegetable dyes. One usually sees only one of the panels but this piece has both side panels and the banded design kilim which forms the back of the bag. The saddlebags were used by tribes to move their household items from one location to another from their seasonal moves.
