About the Item

These unique pieces are entirely handcrafted using a traditional technique developed in the 14th century by the Hutsuls; highlanders who have inhabited the Carpathian mountains of Ukraine for centuries, intrinsically bound to the earth through ancient myth, mysticism and folklore. Believed to be samoridny (self-born), and revered for their healing and medicinal properties, these magical pieces are created in direct synergy with nature. Made with quality virgin wool from the regional mountain sheep, each piece is woven by hand on a wooden loom, then submerged in the mountain river to gently felt the wool fibres. After being laid out in the sun to naturally dry, they are hand brushed on one side to create the soft, fleecy texture. Heavy enough to be a rug, and light enough to be a blanket. Handwoven and hand brushed pure virgin wool. Please note that due to the artisanal technique used to make this piece, it is possible for small twigs and leaves to get caught in the fibres. Hand dyed and hand crafted pieces may have irregularities in colour, this is part of what makes them special.

Night Moves #6, Grasping, US
By Gerri Spilka
Located in New York, NY
By taking ordinary pieces of cotton and transforming them into forceful collages of luminous color, contemporary textile artist Gerri Spilka brings together disparate elements of quilting, modern abstraction, and human interaction to re-imagine work of traditional sewing into a visual narrative on the collective experience. Spilka’s works bypass the purely domestic nature of typical quilting most remarkably for their color, scale, and movement. With some pieces as large as 95 inches, her works often have the presence of murals, or a modernist idea of a grand tapestry. While formally a structural component holding the layers together, the quilting stitches also establish subtle dimension and texture that can be transformed with the use of contrasting thread colors or directional shifts. Spilka hand dyes her fabrics in an antique ringer...
