Antique Ottoman Turkish Mosque Embroidery c. Late 19th Century 4’ x 5’2”

About the Item

This remarkable late 19th century embroidered wall hanging features a grand mosque rendered in intricate metallic threadwork, likely originating in Ottoman Anatolia. Designed for devotional or decorative use, the central mihrab-like arch surrounds a domed mosque flanked by slender minarets, all set beneath a crescent moon and star. Stylized floral forms, eight-pointed stars, and densely embroidered Arabic calligraphy fill the field and borders, adding layers of spiritual and artistic significance. The use of metallic thread, likely silver-wrapped or gold-toned, gives this textile a rich shimmer under changing light. The embroidery is worked into a soft neutral ground with soft tones of bronze, rose, taupe, and sage, making it not only a rare historical artifact but also an incredibly decorative textile for modern interiors. In nice antique condition with some surface wear and age-appropriate patina, this piece was acquired from the private collection of a prominent antique rug and textile dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts. An exceptional example of Ottoman devotional textile art that would be equally at home in a serious collection or thoughtfully layered interior.
