About the Item

Julien Van Vlasselaer (1907–1982) was a Belgian artist known for his distinctive contributions to tapestry and monumental art. Born in Brussels, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Higher School of Decorative Arts. He began his artistic journey as a painter but gradually expanded into large-scale public artworks, including stained glass, mosaics, frescoes, ceramics, and murals throughout the 1930s. After World War II, Van Vlasselaer shifted his focus toward tapestry, producing detailed tapestry cartoons—full-scale preparatory designs. His subjects drew inspiration from Flemish folklore, nature, and everyday life. While his earlier work leaned toward figurative compositions, he evolved into a more abstract style characterized by richly textured botanical forms and geometric backdrops, influenced by Cubism. By the late 1960s, his tapestry work became bolder and more vibrant. One of his notable pieces from 1969, Bouquet d’anniversaire, features fantastical floral elements rendered with dynamic color and monumental scale, highlighting his mature style and technical precision. Van Vlasselaer was a member of “Forces Murales,” a group that helped shape Belgian monumental art in the postwar period. Over his lifetime, he earned multiple national and international accolades, and his works continue to be collected and sold at auctions. He remains recognized for his innovative approach to textile art and his ability to blend traditional techniques with modernist expression. Julien Van Vlasselaer passed away in 1982, leaving behind a vibrant legacy in 20th-century European tapestry.
