About the Item

Richly embroidered and full of history, this stunning antique textile is a fine example of Zardozi needlework, likely crafted in Northern India in the late 19th or early 20th century. The densely worked surface features elaborate paisley and floral motifs rendered in silver metallic thread, with raised details and beading that give the piece a dimensional, almost sculptural quality. The shimmering embroidery sits on a crimson ground, bordered by fine metallic fringe that frames the composition beautifully. This type of work, known as Zardozi—derived from Persian words for gold (“zar”) and embroidery (“dozi”)—was traditionally reserved for courtly use or ceremonial settings. The high relief and intricate workmanship seen here would have required the skilled hands of master artisans, often working for weeks or months to complete a single panel. While similar textiles were sometimes used as ceremonial table covers, altar cloths, or decorative throws, their primary role was to signal wealth, refinement, and devotion. In nice antique condition with age-appropriate wear to the embroidery, this textile comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA. It would make a breathtaking wall hanging, an opulent table covering, or a collector’s centerpiece. 21 x 27.5
