About the Item

A grand scale country house Flemish 18th Century hand painted toile wall hanging. These hand painted wall hangings were commissioned by large country houses and castles to line the cold stone walls. When hand woven tapestries were too expensive, these hand painted canvases were a more affordable stand in. Circa 1730. These hangings are rare survivors and the natural linen becomes fragile with age. This example has had careful conservation to stabilise it, with a new linen backing to give it strength. Has signs of wear commensurate with age.
