About the Item
Mid-Century Aubusson tapestry designed by Jean Picart Le Doux (1902-1982) and handwoven at Maison M. Berthaut in Aubusson France. Woven in 1955, entitled "Petite Lyre Marine", it depicts the musical instrument immersed in an under water spectacular surrounded by beautiful fish. The artist's name is woven in the lower right corner and the monogram for the atelier is woven in the lower left corner. The bolduc on the verso is hand signed by the artist.
Jean Picart le Doux is one of the foremost figures in the renaissance of the art of tapestry. . A close associate of Lurçat, whose theories he would adopt (limited palette, numbered cartoons…), he was a founding member of the A.P.C.T. (Association des Peintres-cartonniers de Tapisserie), and soon after, a teacher at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.
