About the Item

Magnificent 17th-Century French Aubusson Tapestry – Alexander the Great and Bucephalus An exceptional and rare Aubusson tapestry from the 17th century, masterfully handwoven in wool and silk, presenting a grand allegorical scene of Alexander the Great receiving divine favor before battle. Measuring an imposing 219 cm high by 218 cm wide, this nearly square masterpiece captures the height of classical heroism interpreted through the refined elegance of French baroque design. At the center, the youthful conqueror—crowned with a Roman-style helmet adorned with a lion’s head—sits astride Bucephalus, his legendary steed. Above them hovers a richly detailed angel, offering a laurel crown while blowing a trumpet of celestial announcement. To the right, a pair of military tents flutter with heraldic banners, hinting at the imminent campaign, while the lush floral border bursts with 17th-century exuberance in vivid pinks, blues, and ochres. Signed “M. R. D’OVBVSSON FECIT” along the lower edge, this tapestry bears the hallmark of one of the royal manufactories of Aubusson, which flourished under Louis XIV. The harmonious palette, theatrical composition, and well-preserved texture make this an ideal acquisition for collectors of classical iconography, museum-quality textiles, or connoisseurs of early French decorative arts. This tapestry remains a testament to the grandeur and mythic ambition of the early modern period. A majestic statement piece—timeless, historic, and truly regal.
