About the Item

Among the most visually and technically exquisite of all Kashmiri textiles, this rare antique moon shawl—also known as a chand dar—features a dramatic central medallion inset in the traditional square kani-woven field. The surrounding boteh and floral latticework are executed in extraordinarily fine detail, woven with the signature bobbin technique unique to Kashmir’s 19th-century kani tradition. The brilliant contrast between the red and ivory ground of the moon and the intricate, jewel-like border creates a breathtaking effect whether used as a display textile or worn ceremonially. This shawl bears a woven inscription in the medallion field—likely the name of the workshop or master weaver—indicating that it was created as a bespoke commission or for export to elite patrons. The weaving is dense and crisp, with harmonious color balance and no interruptions in the overall pattern, which is a testament to the artisan’s extraordinary skill. In nice antique condition with minor thread breaks and edge wear appropriate to its age, this shawl comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA. A rare opportunity for serious collectors of textiles, Islamic art, or South Asian decorative arts. 4’7 x 9’10
