Sans Titre, Tapestry by Maison Pinton, from a Pierre Dmitrienko painting
About the Item
Sans Titre, Aubusson tapestry, Made by Ateliers Maison Pinton, from Pierre Dmitrienko. Wool, H 203 x L 173 cm / H 79.9 x W 70 in. Limited Edition of 6, Signed on the back
For over 150 years, Pinton has been perpetuating the savoir-faire of the Royal Manufacture of Aubusson, which has made France famous for the manufacture of top-of-the-range rugs and tapestries. In the 20th century, textile art emancipated itself from painting, becoming a medium in its own right, exploring new techniques. Strongly attached to the quality of their work, the Pinton workshops pursue a tradition of close collaboration with contemporary artists, in perpetual exchange with the different trades that interact from the first sketch to the fall of the loom. Galerie Negropontes wished to confront these high standards with those of Perrin & Perrin. The couple was immediately drawn into this new project, examining, proposing and questioning themselves in order to work with a hitherto unknown material, turning it into a new mode of expression.

Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) was a French artist and designer known for her bold use of colorful geometric patterns. The Boccara Gallery has the privilege of offering one of the largest selections of important Sonia Delaunay tapestries in the world. Didier Marien, one of the first art dealers to understand the importance of the work of this avant-garde artist, played an essential role in her recognition. Today, the Boccara Collection brings together Sonia Delaunay’s most significant and imposing works. Each of these works is a dazzling testament to her innovative approach to color and form, continually redefining our perception of art.
Sonia Delaunay’s explorations of color and form were integral to the development of abstract art in the early 20th century. Initially inspired by quilt patterns, Delaunay eventually incorporated the stylistic concerns of Cubism, Fauvism, and Futurism into her bright, geometric paintings and prints. It was only natural that she should come to tapestry, which allows the most complex composition to be integrated into the work. There is probably no contemporary painter who has, as well as Sonia Delaunay, assimilated the properties of fabrics to make them translate the color as matter and texture as well as flat surface. No one was better prepared to express herself in terms of weaving, and to project her thoughts onto the walls in this language that is more supple, warmer than that of painting, of equal strength and richness. Sonia Delaunay’s tapestries...
