About the Item

Sonia Delaunay Eclipse Aubusson Tapestry in Wool c. 1970 50 x 67 1/2 in, 128 x 171 cm Edition of 6 inscribed 'EX-A' in the weave on a wool label affixed to the reverse (aside from the edition of 6) Manufactured by Atelier Pinton Frères, Felletin, France Provenance: Private Collection, France Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) was a French artist and designer known for her bold use of colorful geometric patterns. The Boccara Gallery has the privilege of offering one of the largest selections of important Sonia Delaunay tapestries in the world. Didier Marien, one of the first art dealers to understand the importance of the work of this avant-garde artist, played an essential role in her recognition. Today, the Boccara Collection brings together Sonia Delaunay’s most significant and imposing works. Each of these works is a dazzling testament to her innovative approach to color and form, continually redefining our perception of art. Sonia Delaunay’s explorations of color and form were integral to the development of abstract art in the early 20th century. Initially inspired by quilt patterns, Delaunay eventually incorporated the stylistic concerns of Cubism, Fauvism, and Futurism into her bright, geometric paintings and prints. It was only natural that she should come to tapestry, which allows the most complex composition to be integrated into the work. There is probably no contemporary painter who has, as well as Sonia Delaunay, assimilated the properties of fabrics to make them translate the color as matter and texture as well as flat surface. No one was better prepared to express herself in terms of weaving, and to project her thoughts onto the walls in this language that is more supple, warmer than that of painting, of equal strength and richness. Sonia Delaunay’s tapestries are emblematic of her textile designs and fashion patterns, which typically use geometric shapes including circles, triangles, and rectangular blocks of color. Each element of every tapestry is meticulously arranged to form a rhythmic harmony and balanced composition, showcasing Sonia Delaunay’s keen sense of design.
