About the Item

XXL Wall Tapestry by Renate Bonfanti, Italy ca. 1970. Renate was trained on art school in Milan and finished her studies in Oslo, Norway at the kvinnelige industriskole in the early 1950’s. To perfect her weaving skills she took an internship at autonomous Norwegian textile artist, Else Halling. Back in Italy Bonfanti met several important designers and architects prominent where Gio Point and Bruno Munari, notable others were Carlo Scarpa, Dino Gavina and Bruno Danese. These figures where of great influence for the inspiration and interest for architecture and design to Bonfanti. The design of this tapestry is part of the poetic 'Algeria' collection, the concept started in 1959 and the production started in 1962. The decorative motifs where made by hand with the use of yarns in different colors which created a beautiful gradient effect. The process was very intensive and a large tapestry like this took between 5-6 weeks to make. The material used for this tapestry is linen for the warp and wool for the welt. The size of this work is extraordinary and stands out from others in the oeuvre of Bonfanti. Bonfanti was rewarded for her talent and value for the Italian design world, among the awards the most prestigious award is the Compasso d’oro. The work is signed at the back. In excellent original condition.
