About the Item

This pair of earthenware elephant form wall brackets showcases rich, intricate detailing. Each bracket features a sculpted elephant head adorned with elaborate gilt and painted embellishments, capturing the grandeur of exotic and neoclassical design influences. The textured surface of the elephants is highlighted with ornate tassels, patterned headdresses, and beaded adornments, exuding a sense of regal sophistication. The brackets are mounted on rectangular backplates with decorative gilded borders and a hand-painted motif in warm red and gold tones. Each piece is carefully crafted to function as a decorative wall shelf. Their vibrant finish and finely rendered details make these brackets captivating for collectors or enthusiasts of unique decorative arts. With some minor wear commensurate with age, the brackets remain in excellent vintage condition, retaining their vibrant painted and gilded surfaces. These elephant form wall brackets belonged to the collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill, whose Southampton, New York estate reflected their passion for elegant and historic design. Catherine Cahill, the daughter of prominent attorney John T. Cahill, was a noted animal rights activist. William L. Bernhard, a philanthropist and descendant of the Lehman banking family, is recognized for his involvement in the arts and cultural institutions.
