About the Item

Brilliantly glazed in a vivid, jade green glaze, this large and rare wall-mounted shallow bowl was designed by Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery at the height of its success during the Art Deco era, before the company closed early in the Great Depression. Here, Gregory depicts the huntress Atalanta accompanied by her hound, drawing from the annals of Green mythology. Atalanta was reputed to be faster than any other human, and one famous story describes her offer to marry anyone who could outrun her; however, those whom she beat she would kill. In one race Hippomenes was given three golden apples of the Hesperides by the goddess Aphrodite; when he dropped them in the course of the race, Atalanta stopped to pick them up and so lost the race. Before Gregory established his own studio, working largely in the New York area, he was one of the leading artists at Cowan outside Cleveland, and this is one of his largest and most ambitious creations.
