Carved Italian Stemma Plaque with Cornucopias, Eagle, and Winged Angel

About the Item

A stemma is a written record of a family tree that can be traced back to ancient Rome when they recorded such genealogical information on scrolls. In the Middle Ages, coat of arms began to replace stemmas as the preferred method for conveying familial lines. This Italian stemma plaque has been inspired by both practices, with three pairs of volute scrolls surrounding a stylized coat of arms. An eagle with wings displayed sits at the top of this hand-carved plaque, perched on top of a pair of scrolls that form the coat of arms top border. In heraldic terms, the eagle is said to be “rising contourné”, meaning that its feet are still on the ground and the head is facing toward the viewer’s right. The scrolls that the eagle perch on also form a foliate border at the base of the escutcheon. A pair of interlaced cornucopias, overflowing with fruit and flowers, are emblazoned on the shield. The cornucopias are adorned with fluting and bundled together by a bow. Directly beneath the heraldic display is a winged angel mascaron. Our masterfully carved Italian stemma plaque can be hung on an exterior or interior wall, making it an instant conversation piece.

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...
