Continental 19th century Stone and Bronze plaque

About the Item

A wonderfully decorative and large scale Continental 19th century Stone and Bronze plaque. This stunning circular wall decor is framed by a mottled border accented with patinated Bronze Fleur de Lys mounts. At the center of the domed shield is Constantine the Great, the Emperor of Rome from AD 306-337, and who is credited with elevating Christianity in the Roman state. He is depicted in armor while wielding an impressive sword, and defending the figure of Roma, a female deity who personified the city of Rome. Constantine and Roma are showcased at the center of the cataclysm, while below is a winged maiden consoling the fallen. Above are two winged figures holding a crown, which is symbolic of divine approval and Constantine's heavenly authority. Wonderful presence, proportions and attention to detail throughout.
