"Crested Water Bird, " Art Deco Rondel in Black and Gold by Waylande Gregory

About the Item

Rare and winning, this lovely Art Deco porcelain rondel, glazed in black, gold and red on a white ground, was designed and executed by Waylande Gregory, the great American sculptor and ceramicist. The crested water bird depicted is exotic and full of life, and is shown in a field of gold plant forms, and wading in a wavy, Art Deco body of water. Gregory was a renowned WPA sculptor and innovative ceramicist and produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums.
