"Phoenix in Black & Gold w/ Scarlet Ground", Fabulous Art Deco-Mid Century Dish

About the Item

Boldly designed and brilliantly glazed in tones of scarlet, jet black, white and gold, this dish sports an exotic phoenix bird resting on a filigreed tree branch, with one wing raised high. The colors are glorious, especially the full-bodied red of the background. The artist was Waylande Gregory, one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft and later for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums. The dish is signed on the bottom, and includes a rare paper label indicating that it was made at Gregory's home and studio in Bound Brook, New Jersey.
