About the Item

A magnificent example of WPA sculptor Waylande Gregory's work at the height of his career in the 1930s, when he was creating major fountains, public monuments and World's Fair sculptures, this panel depicts Adam and Eve at the moment when the serpent encouraged them to eat of the apple of knowledge. The two figures are beautifully sculpted, and are depicted against a ground of mottled blue glaze that hints at the Mediterranean and the sky of Eden. The piece is boldly signed on the reverse and is wired for hanging against a wall.
