About the Item
The piece explores themes of monstrosity, addiction, mental health struggles,
and serves as an allegory for depression. It reflects the transformation of a
woman, my sister, cursed to become a sleepless, addicted, and lonely monster,
blending woman and snake.
"The pieces are part of my project ‘MMXV Bestiary’ exploring monstrosity
amid Greece’s post-2008 financial crisis, highlighting the resulting impact
of violence, poverty, and youth unemployment. Drawing from personal
experiences, I wrote semi-fictional stories that merge mental health struggles
and substance abuse with ancient myths of innocents cursed into monsters.
The mythical creatures are entangled with their modern counterparts, bound
by unjust social contracts. Their stories are mixed and overlapping: Claws
merge with cocaine and tails with Xanax. Each piece embodies a monster’s
story, with clay, like myths, transcending time, mirroring emotions caught
between hardness and fragility." - Niki Danai
The Gems was part of the performance Exhibition "The Theater of Things" the show transformed the gallery into a domestic stage — an ever-evolving space shaped by the creative voices of seven designers. Each night, one of them slept in the space. Each morning, a journalist, curator, or critic joined for coffee and conversation — exploring what it means to live among collectible pieces.
Inspired by radical gestures like Gianni Pettena’s La Casa all’Elba and Joseph Beuys’ Coyote performance, the exhibition is both lived experience and open dialogue.
Unique piece.
