About the Item
A very well done MCM seascape / city scene mosaic on board by David Lavington, circa 1970s. The bright and colorful piece is in good vintage condition with a few mosaic pieces missing on the bottom left row (please see pictures) and measures 9" x 9". The scene is mounted on a 1" thick piece of plywood with felt trim around the border and is signed in pencil on reverse. Very cool piece! #2499
David Lavington (May 19, 1951 - October 4, 1995) was an American artist who was best known for his prints, paintings, sculptures and mosaics. Asian mystics influenced his original abstract paintings in verdant and copper on handmade paper. Fluent in several languages, Mr. Lavington traveled globally for inspiration by trips into the Amazon, Asia’s Golden Triangle, Egypt, Israel, Greek Isles, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Hawaii, and Tahiti.
His Work has been displayed in one-man shows here and abroad. He had his first one-man museum show at the Vincent Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam at the age of 25, and his work has been featured in many museums and galleries in Paris, London, Amsterdam, and New York. Recently his works were shown at The National Club in New York. Two of his widely acclaimed serigraph jungle prints were selected by UNICEF for greeting cards.
Born in Denver, Mr. Lavington was raised in Southern California. As a teenager, Mr. Lavington received the Certificate Assiduite’ from the University of Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France, and while still in high school he received the prestigious Boettcher award at the Denver Art Museum. He was named one of the outstanding young artists of America by Hallmark, which awarded his a scholarship for undergraduate studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. While at Pratt, Mr. Lavington studied sculpture under J. Lipschitz in Pietra Santa, Italy. He graduated from the Santa Barbara Art Institute with an M.F.A. degree with honors.
David Lavington's art work can be found in Private Collections and Corporate Collections including Shell Oil, Honeywell, Pfizer, Citicorp, The New York Times, Xerox and Hartcourt General.
