About the Item

A spectacular and rare example of late-19th-century Venetian glass mosaic by Salviati & Co., masterfully designed and executed in Murano, Italy. Composed of three large cement-mounted panels (315.5 cm wide × 189 cm high overall), this monumental work portrays a shimmering aerial map of Venice in vibrant shades of blue and green, with golden glass tesserae forming the inscription “VENEZIA” in the lower left corner, alongside the mosaic signature Salviati & Co. Salviati’s firm, founded in 1859 by Antonio Salviati and Lorenzo Radi, played a pivotal role in reviving Venice’s Venetian glass and mosaic tradition after centuries of decline Building upon Radi’s enamel glass innovations, Salviati & Co. gained international acclaim for restoring Basilica mosaics—especially in St. Mark’s—and later producing grand architectural commissions across Europe, including Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Victoria & Albert Museum . Key Features • Historic Provenance: Crafted by Salviati & Co. on Murano in the late 19th century; identical techniques and material sources tie it to the firm’s output during its artistic prime . • Materials & Construction: Thousands of individually cut Murano glass tesserae, enamelled and kiln-fused, securely affixed to cement board backing across three modular panels for transport and installation. • Authentic Signature: Bottom left panel features the ‘Salviati & Co.’ signature in gold mosaic, authenticating its origin. • Imposing Scale: At over 3 meters wide, it is ideally suited as a dramatic focal point in gallery, museum, or luxury residential interiors. • Condition & Preparation: Panels are stable and ready for professional hanging.
