About the Item

Elegant and beautifully crafted, this superb example of Swedish Grace artisanry was made by the famed Svenskt Tenn workshop in Sweden, which produced a wide range of artisan-designed and made sculptures and home goods, often in pewter, as here. Svenskt Tenn was founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, who brought together an astounding array of artists such as Josef Frank and Anna Petrus, many now world-renowned, to create a wide range of objects. Ericson herself was known for creating works in pewter with patterns or designs incised in the metal, so this piece is attributed to her artistry. Here she depicts Salome, holding the head of John the Baptist, the scene framed by palm trees to either side. The artist rubbed a dark ink or patina into the incised lines, to make them stand out against the silvery finish of the pewter. The reverse side is well-marked.

"Nudes in Paradise, " Spectacular Wall Charger, High Style Art Deco by Sevres
By Jean Beaumont
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most spectacular high style Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this large wall charger depicting two female nudes and a deer in an idyllic, color-drenched garden was made in 1927 by the famed Sevres porcelain manufactory in France. The designer was Jean Beaumont, who is known for designing some of the most ambitious and striking of Sevres' Art Deco vases and other pieces in the 1920s and 30s, and the ceramic artist who applied the glazes was Adrien-Auguste Leduc, who worked at Sèvres from 1923 until 1948. Made only two years after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was held in Paris, which gave the Art Deco style its name many years later, the theme of this charger -- and its stylized, elongated nudes...
