About the Item

A 1960's Mexican mid-century modern hammered steel sun wall sculpture by Talleres Emaús in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. The sun's face has hollow eyes and open mouth. It has two round cheeks. Ten straight rays and ten curved rays, to total 20 rays in the sunburst. The piece is unsigned. Talleres Monásticos Emaús is a metal workshop founded inside the Benedictine Monastery of Saint Mary of the Resurrection in Ahuacatitlan, near Cuernavaca, Morelos in 1956. The monastery was established by Gregorio Lemercier (1912 - 1987), a Belgian monk who wished to take the reforms of the Second Vatican Council into the life of clerics regular. With the help of bishop Sergio Mendez Arceo (1907 - 1982), Lemercier was able to establish the monastery, where he introduced psychoanalysis to his postulants. The monastery was closed in 1967 by the Roman Rota under the papacy of Paul VI. The former monks remained in community until 1979, where they continued working on the monastery's workshops: silkscreen printing, carpentry, parquetry and silversmith. The monastery's building, projected by architect - monk Fray Gabriel Chávez de la Mora, is endangered by demolition threats as of 2025.
