Wedgwood Basalt Plaque — Mythological Scene, Circa 1800 Rare Black Basalt Relief

About the Item

Rare Wedgwood Black Basalt Plaque — Mythological Scene, Circa 1800 An exceptional and rare large-format Wedgwood black basalt plaque from around 1800. This finely executed relief depicts an intricate mythological scene, showcasing multiple classical figures in dynamic poses, rendered with extraordinary detail and artistry. Large Wedgwood basalt plaques of this scale are particularly scarce due to the technical challenges involved in firing sizable, flawless ceramic reliefs during the period. As a result, few were produced and even fewer have survived in such remarkable condition. Details Origin: England Date: Circa 1800 Material: Black basalt ceramic This plaque reflects the Neoclassical Revival of the late Georgian period, when interest in ancient Greece and Rome, sparked by archaeological discoveries and the Grand Tour, dominated European decorative arts. Wedgwood's basalt ceramics were at the forefront of this movement, admired for their aesthetic and technical innovation. Dimensions Primary plaque: 60 cm × 26 cm Secondary plaque: 43 cm × 9 cm Both pieces are presented in complementary, more recent frames for wall display. A superb addition for collectors of neoclassical decorative arts, Wedgwood ceramics, or rare early 19th-century English design.

A late 18th / early 19th century framed Wedgwood black basalt plaque depicting ‘The Death of Meleager’ also known as ‘The Death of a Roman Warrior’. Impressed with maker’s mark to plaque reverse. Wedgwood first began creating black basalt wares in 1768. This dense and fine-grained stoneware was designed to imitate old bronze statues and remains to this day synonymous with fine quality. This plaque appears in the company’s 1773 catalogue. While the design continued to be made into the 19th century, this Wedgwood plaque was infrequently attempted due to firing challenges made difficult by the plaque’s elaborate detail and scale. "Algernon Sullivan Plaque, " Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine
By Jules-Edouard Roiné 1
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era -- one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today -- but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt...
