Aimee Wilder
Born and raised in New York, Aimée spent her school holidays exploring the fashion showrooms where her parents both worked. From this early exposure to fashion trends and textiles, Aimée developed the foundation for her diverse interest in art and design. After her graduation from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2001, she began developing a body of fine-art illustrations and patterns while working as a freelance designer. This led to positions as a designer for several well-known firms including DwellStudio, Martha Stewart Living. and The Gap. In her free time, Aimée continued to develop her own art and patterns and became further transfixed by the world of textiles and design. In 2008, Vans took notice of her bold designs and playful aesthetic. Three of her patterns were featured on 30 styles of shoes and fashion accessories, bringing Aimee Wilder to a global audience. Emboldened by her first fashion-licensing contract, Aimee launched her namesake brand and began translating her artwork into designer wallpaper, debuting at New York’s ICFF in 2009. In recent years, Aimée’s line has expanded beyond wallpaper to include home textiles and hand-made rugs, as well as accessories such as pillows and poufs.

Puya atra, the flower upon which this design is based, is a Bromeliad. It is an important food source for spectacled bears with extraordinary turquoise flowers, an incredibly rare flower colour. The flowers are pollinated by super-heroic little hummingbirds which can fly at speeds which, relative to body length, are greater than any other vertebrate, with wing-speeds of over 80 beats per second.
This design is part of The Beatrice Edit, a collaboration between biologist/designer Susy Paisley and her daughter Beatrice, who is a budding interior designer. and avowed minimalist. One day, in a conversation about their different tastes, it occurred to them to do an edit of Newton Paisley designs for people who, like Beatrice, think less is more in their interiors. Best-selling Newton Paisley designs were reimagined as one-colour 18th century toile de Jouys; favourite botanical details from other designs were reconfigured in simple airy geometrical repeats. In this, Susy and Beatrice found themselves inspired by the beautiful folk motifs of Ukrainian embroidery...

Venus flower - Dionaea muscipula Venus fly traps are found in bogs which are low in the nutrients vital to plants like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. These ingenious plants solve this problem by preying on beetles and spiders. (Flies are actually rarely consumed.) Their traps snap shut in less than 0.1 seconds. This most famous of all carnivorous plants described by Charles Darwin as “one of the most wonderful in the world” is native to the Carolinas in a small area around Wilmington. The blooms are rare, delicate and beautiful.

Lizard orchid - Himantoglossum hircinum Goat-like and with tongues like straps (or so it is described by its Latin name), the lizard orchid has long lip petals which are spiralled and dotted with pink or purple in the centre. It is a tall plant which despite its exuberant form, hides in plain site. Rare in the UK, it thrives on certain golf courses and dunes, where the tiny seeds are carried on the golfers’ shoes.
