When Art Imitates Life

In these captivating spaces, what hangs on the wall is what steals the show. Nine members of our Trade community explained the importance of fine art in a room — and how selecting a piece is an iterative process for the designer and a profound journey for their client.

When Art Imitates Life

“I help my clients choose art that embodies the colors and styles they are drawn towards. Once we choose the work, it becomes site-specific to that space. In this project, the room was designed first and then we found works with colors that were reflected in the room. It was a happy accident.”

— Robert Stilin, Principal

"Art is the jewelry of any room, whether it’s created on canvas or found in the fixtures and it has the ability to transform a space that’s bland into something grand."

— Michele Merkin, Principal & Founder

"This striking painting by South African Artist, Velaphi Mezimba was the central focus and inspiration for the design of this Sarasota penthouse. Having a color story inspired by the painting was important. The Century Furniture sofas were covered in a rich green velvet to highlight the green in the painting while the Philip Jeffries grasscloth provided just the right amount of texture to this inviting space."

— Penny Francis, Principal

"Art is personal, emotional and sentimental — it brings our client’s joy so we always treat it with sensitivity. Our job is to highlight art without treating the client’s home as a museum. This particular client has very vibrant pieces, as seen in their media room. We selected schemes that would either hold up against the art or complement the milky hues seen in the work."

— Thad Hayes & David Ries, Principals

"Art is both the inspiration and focal point of our spaces. The works we curate for our clients lend tremendous energy and distinction to our portfolio. At this Florida Estate project, we highlighted the voluminous interior spaces and sprawling grounds with a striking, yet entirely livable showcase of post-war and contemporary works."

— Elena Frampton, Principal

"My mother was a curator and art historian and my parents are both founders of several museums in Puerto Rico, so art has always been an important part of my life. Though I now have a team devoted to sourcing furniture for our projects, I still focus much of my attention on selecting the artwork. I adore this part of the process — it affords one last opportunity for something spectacular to happen."

— Susana Simonpietri, Principal

“I love when art is related to architecture — it's a link to the soul of a space. In Restaurant Drouant in Paris, what strikes us first is a wonderful fresco hand-painted on the walls by Italian artist Roberto Ruspoli that features young girls dancing. They are the “jeunes filles en fleurs” inspired by Marcel Proust’s first novel, which was awarded the Goncourt Prize in this exact room in 1919.”

— Fabrizio Casiraghi, Principal

"At times, art is my jumping-off point and other times it's that finishing touch that brings the scheme altogether. This was the third project I worked on for this client and I wanted art to be a focal point in the space. I found this sculptural bench from Paris on 1stDibs and magic was made. Add in a little greenery and all the elements combine to make a striking, yet simplistic entryway."

— Danielle Colding, Principal & Founder

duett

Duett Interiors

"The mixed media piece in the center of this room is by Chicago-born Artist, Julian Gaines and it features vintage Nike advertisements from the ’80s. The three subjects in the work are life, death and remorse and they're inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat. In the painting, you see him before his fame, at the height of his fame and post-fame. Art is a quintessential storyteller and the visuals add depth and life to the interior."

— Tiffany Thompson, Principal
