Combining unexpected materials with out-there ideas, the Brazilian talents have created icons of modern design.

Otherworldly

Be treated to a riot of color with Patricia Urquiola's ethereal Shimmer Table. Its iridescent finish and prismatic shape cast a range of hues depending on the angle of light.

Cozy Up

This piece from Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec's Quilt series was designed to be the anti-sofa of sorts. It's made from an innovative stretch fabric with foam inserts for a honeycomb appearance that eschews formality and structure.

Right this Way

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby's sleek "Bellhop" lamp is wireless and rechargeable, so it can be conveyed from room to room, like a modern-day candle.

Cheeky Monkey

The greatest of apes — and the most attentive of waiters — the monkey in Jaime Hayon's whimsical side table is made from concrete for indoor and outdoor use.

Sovereign State

Konstantin Grcic envisioned a seat fit for a king (or queen). His Chaos Chair was designed as a perch — not a recliner — that might ennoble everyday conversations.

Plant-Based

The visual movement created by contrasting solid shapes animates Hella Jongerius' Maharam Pillow — and leafy textures dissolve into the background, evoking nature's impermanence.

Finding the Creators of Tomorrow

"1stDibs is a marketplace that includes a full arc of styles and typologies. Although there is a lot of variation within such a collection, all of these pieces are united by high-quality design and fabrication. This includes everything from traditional and transitional furnishing, maximalist statement pieces and conceptual collectible design. Although each of these categories is different, they can be evaluated similarly.

We live in a time where the scale of material culture is unprecedented, and there has never been a more accessible ecosystem to discover new work. Like most of us, I get lost in social media rabbit holes where I can discover work I've never heard of, practically on a daily basis. When I find works that I'm interested in, I research the designers to learn more about them. Because design doesn't happen in a vacuum, exploring the context in which a designer works usually leads to the manufacturers and editors they work with — as well as the exhibitions, galleries and studios with which they're associated. My favorite way of discovering showroom-ready pieces is to visit design fairs (fall is the best season). I'm always excited to see what's happening in Milan, Paris, Helsinki and London. And, I always look forward to seeing the new crop of graduate work coming out of top programs like Eindhoven, ECAL, Cranbrook and RISD."
