18K Gold, Jade, Bangle Created with Ohio Steel, 70mm

About the Item

I created this bangle with heavy gauge Ohio steel that I hand-worked into shape. This open bangle is worn by sliding your wrist through the bangle's narrow opening. It's rigid enough to retain its shape, but flexible enough to fit many wrists. Use two hands to carefully narrow or widen if needed. Adorning the bangle are eight highly translucent slightly bluish-green hand-carved jadeite jade rondel beads from Guatemala, each of which measures almost 10mm. They are accompanied by a pair of 8mm agarwood (or oud) wood beads. Agarwood is a rare wood prized for centuries as a perfume ingredient and an expensive one at that. The aroma is a result when a particular species of tree native to Asia becomes infected with a particular bacteria. The longer and more intense the infection, the greater the smell. These are not antique beads, so their aroma is extremely subtle. A 12.45mm Guatemalan jadeite bead serves as the focal point and a pair of small (4.29mm) 18K yellow gold rings serve as bookends on either side. Like most of the pieces in this collection, there is no lab certification included for the jade. This saves money and helps me keep the price down but does require a leap of faith on your end. All of the jade I use in my collection are from previously-tested "batches" from specific suppliers and all previous samples have tested as "A" jade. I only use "leftover" jade beads that I had in my collection after creating a necklace and then sending that necklace to the gem lab for testing and certification. Even though I can identify jade treatments with about 99% accuracy, I only sell jade that has been lab tested and is natural and untreated. Even my nephrite has been tested, which is highly uncommon in the industry. Yet Tiffany & Co. coats their nephrite necklaces in polymer. So even though I'm not including lab certification (with several exceptions), you will receive only untreated jade. With this piece (and all the others in my new collection), I bring together the humble and the rare; the polished and the raw. All of it 100% natural. My approach was very Art Nouveau. This period in jewelry history was born in the late 1800s as a rebellion against industrialization. Jewelry was nature-inspired, featured new materials not previously seen in jewelry, and hand craftsmanship. The irony is, I'm using steel; the very essence of industrialization. I created a full line of bangles and bracelets with pure Ohio steel that is nickel and lead free and will rust if you don't care for it. Which is what I love about these pieces and why I created the line: they require care. You have to do some work. As with any positive relationship. Every once in a while, either rub some mineral oil over the bangle or bracelet, or massage some bee's wax into it while you watch Netflix. Use a soft cotton cloth and take your time. You will be rewarded with the most luminous jadeite jade beads and carvings and steel that is as pure as the steel that powered America's industrial revolution. Steel is not considered a "precious metal", especially not this kind of steel -dark, brooding, will break out in a rash of rust if ignored. The steel jewelry we see on the market today is refrigerator stainless steel. Not rare? As a jewelry store owner and sometimes creator, I know just where to go to purchase as much gold, platinum or silver wire as I want and have it delivered overnight. It took me weeks to find the steel I use in my Ohio Steel collection because most steel wire today is created not to rust and to have an appealing precious metal-like sheen. Once I found my source, it took a long time to be delivered and came with a warning to keep it waxed or oiled. My new Ohio Steel collection is for somebody who wants more than just a piece of jewelry; but rather a companion, a sort of powerful amulet in bracelet form. Each piece takes many days to create because of the hand-burnishing and waxing. Caring for the one of my bracelets is hypnotic, like knitting; a soothing thing it is, rubbing wax into steel and stone. As somebody who is allergic to essentially all chemicals and is also on "the spectrum," the quality of tactility is very important to me, but so is finding new ways to sooth myself. Thus, my new Ohio Steel Collection.

Jade, Bangle, Created with Ohio Steel & 18K Gold, 70mm, 9"

I created this jadeite jade bead bangle with heavy gauge Ohio steel that I hand-worked into shape. This open bangle is worn by sliding your wrist through the bangle's narrow opening. Then you slide the "S" through the loop. It measures 9" in length but the beads add thickness making it wear more like an 8.5" bracelet. It can fit many different wrist sizes. As long as your hand measures more than 70mm from knuckle to knuckle, it won't slide off your hand. But an individual with a large to extra-large hand and wrist will probably find this bangle most comfortable. You can wear it alone or stacked with others. Twenty-six hand-carved beads move freely along the steel. These are untreated hand-cut and polished beads in a variety of green and greenish-gray tones. The beads range in size from 6.40mm to 8.24 and they average 8mm. A 7.6mm gold ring serves as a slender focal point. Like most of the pieces in this collection, there is no lab certification included for the jade. This saves money helps me keep the price down, but does require a leap of faith on your end. All of the jade I use in my collection are from previously-tested "batches" from specific suppliers and all previous samples have tested as "A" jade. 24K Gold, Jade, Bangle Created with Ohio Steel, XL 77mm

I created this bangle with heavy gauge Ohio steel that I hand-work into shape. This bangle features one primitive-cut bluish-green natural and untreated jadeite bead from Guatemala, a teal green untreated jadeite bead from Burma (Myanmar), a "devil's work" double ring carved from a single piece of blue untreated (except for paraffin -wax), and a 4 gram ring of pure 24 karat yellow gold. The interior diameter is 77mm, so it will fit an individual with a larger hand and wrist. I'm a 6'1" man with large hands and this bangle fits me perfectly. The steel is 2.66mm thick, the round jade bead is almost 17mm, the gold ring 22.74mm, the primitive bead...

It's rigid enough to retain its shape, but flexible enough to fit many wrists. Use two hands to carefully narrow or widen if needed. Adorning the bangle are ten highly translucent earth-toned hand-carved jadeite jade beads from Burma (Myanmar), each of which measures approximately 8mm. They are accompanied by a pair of 6.8mm 18k yellow gold rings. A 9.81mm sage green opaque (yet translcent) focal point bead resides in the center.
