About the Item

An Italian archaeological revival micro mosaic and gold suite, consisted of a brooch and a pair of earrings, each of the domed-shaped earrings, bearing a circular micro mosaic panel depicting a multi-coloured insect on white background, surrounded by gold beading decoration, to the centre of four circular and four kite-shaped mosaic panels, to a yellow gold mount with hook fitting, accompanied by similar designed micro-mosaic decorated brooch, all in a gold mount with brooch fitting, circa 1840, bearing the Papal State hallmark, the brooch measuring 3.1cm in diameter, the earrings measuring 2.1cm in diameter, gross weight 24.67 grams, in an original fitted case. This antique suite is in very good condition for its age. Marked and tested as 18ct gold. This beautifully crafted micro mosaic set comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Micro mosaic is a technique of Ancient Roman art that had a resurgence in popularity in the nineteenth century in Italy. Tourists from England and other parts of Europe would visit Rome as part of their ‘grand tour’ of the ancient world, and many bought micro mosaic jewellery as souvenirs. This set features a pair of earrings and a matching brooch, each with a finely mosaiced insect set in a round gold frame decorated with further mosaic patterns. Exquisitely crafted, this wonderful mosaic set displays Ancient Roman as well as Byzantine influences. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.

Antique Grand Tour 18k Yellow Gold Micromosaic Double Drop Earrings
Located in New York, NY
Grand Tour 18k Yellow Gold Micromosaic Double Drop Earrings 1.5" length from base of ear wire 11 grams in weight for both earrings Made in Italy c.1860s Embark on the tradition of the Grand Tour with our exquisite 18k Yellow Gold Micromosaic Double Drop Earrings. Crafted with the utmost skill and precision in Italy, these earrings are rich in cultural heritage and embody the artistic craftsmanship of the era. Micromosaics, tiny fragments of glass known as tesserae meticulously arranged to create intricate scenes, portraits, or landscapes, became highly sought-after treasures during the 19th century. Coined by Sir Arthur Gilbert, the term “micromosaic” distinguished these works from traditional mosaics. The heyday of micro mosaic jewelry coincided with the Grand Tour, a cultural journey undertaken by affluent Europeans and Americans to absorb Europe's art and culture. Italy, with its history and artistic heritage, was a favored destination, where travelers acquired micromosaic jewelry as cherished souvenirs. These earrings have all the hallmarks of a sentimental lover. Flowers, especially, Forget Me Nots, symbolizing remembrance and true love, have captivated romantics for centuries. Legend has it that a knight, while picking Forget Me Nots for his lady, fell into a stream and, in a final act of love, tossed the flowers to her while crying, "Forget-me-not!" Cherubs, evolving from earthly desires to angelic symbolism, added celestial grace to Italian art. Often depicted as chubby, winged children, cherubs embodied innocence, purity, and divine love. In micromosaic jewelry, cherubs became...
