About the Item
A pair of 18 karat gold antique Georgian poissarde earrings set with a faceted ruby-colored paste glass stone. These are typically early 19th century French loop earrings worn by French fisherman's women.
The front of these earrings are decorated with an acanthus leaf and set with a pink-red ruby-colored paste glass stone in a smooth prong setting surrounded by a rim of gold pearls. Poissardes are a specific type of earrings worn by fisherman's women around 1790-1810 and has an elongated geometric design. The earrings are often set with two or three ornaments one below the other and sometimes set with stones, like these beautiful earrings. The earrings have a typical S-shaped fishhook style, which goes through the ear from back to front.
The name 'poissardes' is derived from the fisherwomen from Paris who were the first to wear this type of earrings and who played an important role during the French Revolution in 1789.
Paste is a synonym for glass when used in the context of a gemstone material. Glass has been used as an imitation of gemstones since ancient times for obvious reasons: it is transparent, can be colored in many ways and, when polished, resembles all kinds of gemstones. It is believed that the first 'forgeries' of pasta were introduced into ancient Greek society, although glass production had long existed by then.
The earrings are in very good condition and of high quality. One earring's loop does not run completely in an arc; below the pinkish glass stone. The provenance of these earrings comes from a Swedish family estate.
