About the Item

Made during the crossover Arts-&-Crafts and Art-Nouveau movements, these antique Chinese earrings feature rare Burmese natural untreated translucent imperial green jadeite, which is intricately hand-carved from bulbous forms into two unique flora designs. The stones are set with four prongs, that are shaped in two different styles, on a square gilt brass or mixed-metal frame. When worn, the kelly-green earrings remain in a diamond position with the white flower-petals located at the bottom tip of only one of them. The reflections and shadows of the polished carvings on the convex stones are enhanced by open backs for maximum illumination. The color is intense on the thickest carvings and equally balanced between blue and yellow like a lush landscape. From the reverse, the saturated green color is evenly distributed, while the white tip is concealed by the frame. Viewed with a loupe, traces of fine brown "fibers" on the concave backs look like the brown skin on weathered green jadeite boulders from Burma, which were the type of jade favored by Chinese craftspersons since the mid-1800s. This is the more valuable condition of Burmese grade-A jadeite. As evidence of the century-plus age of the pair, specks of verdigris are visible on inspection of the findings. With professional cleaning of the carvings, the dark specks of organic material will disappear. The earrings date as early as the 1890s when screw-back twist fasteners emerged and single-gem "button" earrings were fashionable. We included photos taken in natural or artificial light so that the color can be most accurately perceived in different conditions. When viewing the carvings held up towards sunlight the deepest parts are most luminous so that some of the flora is edged in semi-transparent mint green. Marvelous miniature artistry!

This couture glass pair of mid-century, gold-gilt metal, faux-pearl-and-turquoise clip earrings are both stamped "France" on their convex ear-pads, which is characteristic of one-of-a-kind designs commissioned by Parisian couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel before a brand signature was added to her costume jewelry around 1955. The construction matches unsigned poured-glass prong-set cabochon, prong-set crystal, and wired faux-pearl jewelry...

Schreiner 1950s ProngSet UniqueGreen ABCrystals PaveCrystalLeaves Silver Brooch
By Schreiner of New York
Located in Chicago, IL
This colorful prong-set crystal spray brooch by Schreiner New York was made to compliment luxury clothing by a U.S.-based fashion designer, such as Pauline Trigere, in the late 1950s. This piece is special because it shows the unique decorative technique that Schreiner used for a period of several years in reaction to the limited availability of the first aurora-borealis (AB) stones by Swarovski in 1956, which had been designed for Christian Dior. In response to the availability of only the initial AB color that mostly reflected bright blue and the high demand from other designers, Schreiner's creative family soon applied transparent glass paint to create additional colors, such as the light-green painted AB crystals on this brooch. According to Henry Schreiner's late daughter who took over the business with her jewelry-designer husband, this enabled them to become the first to produce costume jewelry with AB stones in different colors, while Swarovski took several years to introduce similar colors. All original painted AB crystals are intact in this brooch, which is significant since a lost stone...

Located in New York, NY
This is a delightful pair of antique Chinese Jade Earrings in the form of Bats. The very rare Jade earrings are each hand carved in the form of a winged Bat. They are absolutely fabulous. In Chinese Mythology Bats are seen as benevolent because “fu,” the character for “bat,” is also the character for “good luck.” In addition, since bats dwell in caverns, which are also the passageway to the realm of the Immortals, they represent longevity, as well as fertility!
