Multicolored Moonstone Palais Royal Grand Tour Scent Bottle with Seal
About the Item
Luna Necklace.
During the Victorian Era, young American adults often spent a year abroad studying all that Europe had to offer, in order to broaden their horizons. This year of travel was often referred to as “The Grand Tour” and offered insights into the history of civilization, arts and music. Little tokens or souvenirs depicting their travels were a popular theme.
This stunning Palais Royal Grand Tour scent bottle, depicting hand-painted Roman architecture was probably a lovely little remembrance of that special year abroad. This unique little scent bottle checks all the boxes of the era and special circumstances - an ornate cartouche lid accented with turquoise, the double sided hand-painted examples of Roman architecture and the popular incorporation of sphinx women carved into the design. This unique scent bottle also holds a surprise at the bottom - a carnelian seal which has remained un-carved, but might have been used to emboss a wax seal. A small nick in the corner of this carnelian seal and the missing stopper (which are commonly missing in scent bottles of this age), are all indications of its lineage and provenance, but do not detract from the beauty of this bottle and could easily be replaced and carved by a jeweler.
This special scent bottle has been married to a long hand-linked chain of marquise faceted multi-colored moonstone with tiny Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and bronze colored coin pearls, stationed at intervals along the chain.
This beautiful antiquity has been artistically re-born as a gorgeous necklace - perfect for Fall and Winter and guaranteed to become a conversation starter.
32 inches long / 3.5 inches drop. Scent bottle measures 1.20 inches wide X 2.04 inches high X .58 inches thick.
