About the Item
INDULGE IN THIS RARE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN OPAL, ROCK CRYSTAL AND GOLD BEAD NECKLACE. THE EXTRAORDINARY JEWEL HAS THREE OPEN WORK GOLD ACANTHUS LEAF MOTIF BEADS OF GREAT BEAUTY. ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FLOWER MOTIF BEADS ARE SPECTACULAR ROUND OPAL BEADS WITH ROUND FACETED ROCK CRYSTAL RONDELLES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE OPALS. THE OPALS ARE THE MOST GORGEOUS NATURAL ROUND OPALS WITH BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW AND ORANGE FIRE. THE NECKLACE DATES TO CIRCA 1860-1900.
We all treasure the antique opal and rock crystal necklaces and this one is such a treasure. It is a romantic elegant Victorian necklace for the ages. The opals are exquisite - but a bit difficult to capture their wonderful fire in the photographs. The acanthus open work flower motif beads add a touch of nature inspired imagery which is so beloved today. The 14 Karat gold beads in the necklace are graduated from 5mm to 8mm. The large flower beads are 15mm in diameter. The clasp is a wonderful barrel clasp with a three bead design. The necklace is completely original to the Victorian period. The Victorians were absolutely enamored with nature and flowers and created jewels as well as sculptures of the fascinating creations. These antique flower gems are among the most highly desired and collected today. The necklace with its fiery opals, sparkling rock crystal and leaf motif beads creates a delightful nature inspired jewel which dances wonderfully around the neck.
The necklace is 17 inches (43 cm) long.
The round beads are 14 Karat Gold and are graduated from 5mm to 8mm. The floral beads are 12-14 Karat Gold and are 15mm in diameter.
