Castellani 18kt Gold Amphora Necklace

About the Item

One of the most widely used motif in Ancient Archeological Jewellery through Victorian times were Amphroras. The Amphora was a container-vessel-vase-jug-pot that was used to store and or transport oil, water, perfume and grain. The pointed bottom on certain amphoras was a way of storing it upright, as the Bottom (pointed end) would go into the sand or dirt floor of that period of time’s dwellings in the Mediterranean world. Created the same way as in Ancient civilizations, this 18kt gold neckless has 39 Amphoras. The back of each Amphora is flat enabling it to fit around the neck laying flat. The braided gold chain that each Amphora is attached is very flexible and comfortable to wear. The tongue and clasp makes it easy to put and to take off. The total length is 18” and the Amphora’s length are 15/16” ( 45.72 cm Length 2.38cm Length of each Amphora). The Castellani and Double Logo plates are affixed to the necklace. Castellani’s Jewellery from the 19th Century is in museums: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections. Fortunato Pio Castellani can be called the "Father of Archeological Revival Jewellery". In the mid 1800's in Rome, Castellani had the entree to visit the Ancient Etruscan ruins. He was able to study these Ancient designs as well as other Ancient Mediterranean civilizations’ jewellery and started to create and re-design under his brand.
