About the Item

A rare graduated single row necklace by Louis Rousselet designed with high Art Deco Parisian style. Made with Galalith beads (a material akin to Bakelite, but French/Continental and little earlier than its American counterpart), in one of the most desirable colour combinations of black and cream, the single row is graduated and strung on fine chain. Other combinations were red and black, green and black, a mix of two browns, green and cream. The beards are manufactured in two parts and fit together beautifully, in a geometric way/pattern. The gilt metal fittings and spacers are all beautifully engraved and turned, with an engraved screw fitting clasp, give an added richness and depth to the necklace. A perfect necklace to wear daily, casually, with Summer attire, or any other season of the year. Timeless, and highly stylish. Louis Rousselet [Paris 1892-1980) was the head of one of the most important pearl manufacturing workshops during the 20th century. He was apprenticed as a glass bead blower at 8 years old and continued to work until 1975. From 1922 until 1935 he made necklaces of Galalith beads, in the Art Deco style, and between 1945 and 1975, he supplied jewellery for Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath, Jean Patou, Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain. He also created many dramatic adornments for Josephine Baker, Mistinguett and other stars of the celebrated Folies Bergeres. Rousselet jewellery is highly regarded, and very recognisable, with a very distinctive and delicate style and manufacture of its own.
