About the Item

Two great pieces of jewelry to wear together or separately. The Chinese pendant is an amazing testament to the carver's art. A scaly, elongated dragon (a Chinese embodiment of good luck and good fortune) is draped over a box that contains two different scenes, front and back. The dragon has been carved as a three-dimensional being. See the way his legs are positioned one way on one side and another way on the other side? He's not just a lifeless border motif; this dude is CLIMBING. The box, from the front, contains a smaller dragon curled up so that he can see a magical elixir being poured down on him from a gourd. On the back, a swallow perches upside down to gaze at either some peaches (symbolizing longevity) or persimmons (symbolizing good fortune). For his help with interpreting the many goings-on presented on this 2.25" x 1.75" canvas, we are grateful to David Ha, a recognized jade expert who has dissected just about every Chinese carving motif there is to see in his long career. He described this piece as "exceptional," done by a skilled craftsperson, most definitely based in China. While dating the piece is difficult, Mr. Ha thinks it was probably made between 1940 and 1970. The piece is in excellent condition, cut from undyed rich blue lapis. The diagonal line right to left through the box is not a crack or a fissure but a natural vein of a mineral (probably pyrite) which the artist cleverly incorporated into this amazing design. The clip-on bale is probably a later addition; it's 14 karat gold and presents a pan chang (infinity) knot, yet another symbol of good luck and good fortune. This is a large pendant and it deserves something substantial as a delivery system. We made the 18" Akoya pearl necklace specifically for this pendant; it's fully knotted on dark blue thread, and the round vintage 14 karat* box clasp (from our vast collection of vintage clasps) is set with a lapis cabochon. The pearls are gorgeous off-round untreated and undyed Akoya -- Japanese saltwater cultured pearls. They're from our trusted pearl dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls, who only deals with saltwater pearls -- Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian. These hefty 9mm pearls have excellent luster and stunning silvery-blue body color with light pink overtones. Weights & Measurements: > Lapis: 58mm long x 44mm wide x 7mm thick (roughly 2-1/4" x 1-3/4" x 1/4") > Pendant length (bale included): 3.25" > Pendant weight: 37.5 grams > Necklace length: 18" (if you would prefer a longer or shorter length, please let us know. The additional charge for dropping or buying a few pearls and restringing is very reasonable.) > Pearl diameter: 8.7mm to 9.2mm (the majority of the pearls are 9mm) > Pearl necklace weight: 48 grams NOTE: These pieces look great together but we're not opposed to selling either piece separately; just let us know and we'll give you adjusted pricing. * The tongue piece of the clasp is stamped "K18" but the clasp fails an 18K acid test. It passes the 14K test swimmingly so it's probably 16K or 17K.

"Gosh" Freeform Pendant in 18K Gold with Diamond & Beryl Slice on Sapphire Chain
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
This one-of-a-kind pendant by Eytan Brandes features a freeform slice of gold, set with a diamond, over a freeform slice of goshenite. Goshenite is a variety of beryl -- basically aquamarine without color. We acquired a little pile of this stuff -- the palest of pale blue and oddly cut -- and were at a loss as to what to do with it until Eytan hit on the idea of setting one of them in a bezel with an oxidized (blackened) inside pan. We love the end result. The swirly pattern of the oxidization plus the faceting plus the minute coloration of the stone combine to give this humble gem a truly unique, shimmery look -- worthy, even, of a hearty "Gosh!" (if anyone actually said "gosh" anymore...) By contrast, the diamond, bezel-set to float in the opening of Eytan's 18 karat gold shard, involves absolutely no hanky-panky. It's an earth-mined, natural and untreated stone weighing 0.04 carats -- a small but high quality sparkler (Eytan rates it G-H color and VS2 clarity). The hand-wrought pulled wire bale is roughly oval-shaped and oversized, since Eytan envisioned his pendant would be paired with beads (which generally require a bigger bale than a chain), but removable. We think our choker-length strand of faceted but rough sapphire...

Antique Old Cut Diamond & Pearl Gold Pendant with Optional Akoya Pearl Necklace
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
We acquired this extraordinary pendant from an antique jewelry dealer in New Zealand. Sort of a hybrid between a garland and a wreath, it boasts at least 1.7 carats in old cut diamonds plus eight pearls, all meticulously set from its hinged bale to its hinged diamond "tail." The enhancer bale is split in the back so that it can be worn with pearls. To that end, we're including a gorgeous 16" strand of 5.5 to 6mm Akoya saltwater pearls. We had these pearls strung specifically for this pendant, and to give the necklace a more contemporary feel, the pearls have been fully knotted in black silk, which we think really pops with the oxidized face of the pendant. The closure is a 14 karat white gold pearl clasp. WEIGHTS & MEASUREMENTS: Pendant Length: 2" Pendant Width (at widest point): 1-1/8" Pendant Weight: 7.15 grams Necklace Length: 16" (See below for more information about these pearls) Total Weight (pearl necklace + pendant): 17 grams Diamonds: 54 stones ranging from 1.2mm to 3.9mm for a total estimated diamond weight of 1.73 carats. More information on the diamonds is provided below. Pearls (Pendant): Eight pearls ranging from 3.5mm to 5.6mm for a total estimated pearl weight of 0.59 grams (0.157 momme). More information on the pearls is provided below. METALS & PENDANT AGE: We think this pendant probably dates from the late 19th or very early 20th century. While the pearls and the diamonds provide clues, the big tipoff is the fact that the stones are set in a thin layer of silver soldered onto 14 karat gold. This technique -- a thin layer of white metal (platinum was also used after around 1870) -- was used until white gold came into general use in the mid- to late 1910s. The distinctive black metal finish is nothing more than generations of the silver's natural oxidization. THE DIAMONDS: The diamonds on this piece predate the proliferation of bright white and clean South African diamonds...
