Genuine Roman Coin 1st Cent. BC Pendant depicting Medusa

About the Item

This sterling silver pendant showcases an authentic denarius from 72 BC, portraying Medusa, her visage adorned with wings and serpents entwined in her hair. The reverse side of the coin showcases Bellerophon atop the famed winged horse, Pegasus. This denarius was crafted under the authority of L. Cossutius Sabula, a Roman monetary magistrate. The Gorgons, consisting of three sisters—Medusa being the most renowned—were figures deeply rooted in ancient Greek mythology. Their origins can be traced back to the earliest literary works of the Greeks, including the works attributed to Homer, where they were depicted as monstrous beings with serpentine locks and a petrifying gaze. Medusa, distinguished by her visage adorned with writhing serpents, held a particular prominence among the Gorgons. The tales surrounding these mythical creatures often emphasized their otherworldly and fearsome qualities. Legends spoke of their gaze, which possessed the eerie power to turn any who met their eyes into stone, a concept that struck both awe and terror into the hearts of those who heard the stories. Their fearful yet revered status led to the widespread use of Gorgon imagery as protective symbols. People believed that by displaying images of the Gorgons—typically Medusa—on objects, buildings, and even shields, they could ward off evil forces and protect themselves from harm. This practice showcased the belief in the Gorgons' ability to avert danger and evil influences, portraying them as powerful guardians.

An interesting, authentic, silver denarius coin from the period of the Roman Republic in 79 BCE, featuring a griffin leaping, is set in a Steven Battelle ancient inspired handmade matte-finish textured bezel mount with 1.8mm VS1 diamond accent. The denarius was approximately the daily wage of a soldier in ancient Rome. This particular type of coin is known as a denarius serratus. The ragged edges of the coin are intentional (all coins of this type have them) to show that coin is pure silver. The minting of the coins was an annual office shared by 3 men, and they often placed the family name on the coins. This coin was minted by moneyer L. Papius, who was probably from Lanuvium, which was about 19 miles outside of Rome. The reverse side of the coin displays...
