About the Item

Blue is one of the rarest colors of jadeite and this contemporary jade pendant features a brilliantly, artfully carved geometric quatrefoil medallion in the most unusual and stunning translucent blueish green. The pendant has a high gloss finish on one side; a perfect mat finish on the other. It hangs from durable nylon cording and there are four matching, expertly carved beads used to adjust the length of the necklace. The carving is the work of a young California jade carver whose art I have long admired. This piece astonished me when I saw it for the first time and I never tire of admiring it. Like all extremely fine jade, it changes throughout the day, as the light changes. Though the gem lab certificate states that this is natural and untreated jadeite jade from Burma. The jade carver insists this is blue Olmec jadeite from Guatemala. Sometimes jadeite from two different regions can be so similar that it is not possible to identify an origin with 100% certainty. Sometimes, the origin of a gemstone is the educated, experienced opinion of the testing laboratory. Whether this jadeite is from South America or Burma it is natural and untreated. As a collector of antique carved jade, it's invigorating to be in the presence of this contemporary, masterfully carved miniature sculpture. Measuring 35.18 mm in diameter, the necklace adjusts in size using the beads on the cording from approximately 16" to 28", not including the carving. On a 6'1" male, the pendant will hang just above the sternum with the cords extended, and just below hollow of the neck with the cord tightened. The flexibility makes it perfect for wearing discreetly under your suit at the office or up tight against your neck when you're out surfing or working out at the gym, so it won't smack you in the face when you incline sit-ups. Of course, the pendant is completely unisex. Exquisite and very, very rare.
