About the Item
This is an absolutely incredible Czech Neiger Brothers Snake and Seahorse Dragon Egyptian Revival Art Glass Pendant Necklace dating to the Art Nouveau period. The fabulous Max Neiger jewel from Czechoslovakia made at the turn of the century has magnificent animal motif designs with a fabulous snake on one side of the pendant and a seahorse-dragon on the other. The pendant hangs from a black cord necklace and is further adorned with green Peking Glass beads within the snake pendant and below the snake portion and within the long fringe at the bottom. On one side of the pendant the snake curls around the green globe or egg in the motif from classical Greek and Norse mythology. The other side depicts a fantastic seahorse or dragon with a sparkling red eye. The cord is fitted with a moveable bolo type of clasp. The pendant and tassel portion are a dramatic 6 inches in length. The necklace dates to circa 1920.
NEIGER BROTHERS
The Neiger brothers – Norbert and Max were born in Gablonz, Czechoslavakia – part of Bohemia’s famed glasswork and jewelry industry.
After he graduated from Gablonz’s technical school’s bijouterie course Norbert started creating jewellery in the family basement circa 1905. His younger brother Max joined him, and while Norbert managed the business, Max managed the workshop and jewellery design. Gablonz had been the centre of Bohemia’s bead making industry stretching back to when it was part of the Austrian Empire, and while they were following in well established footsteps, the work of the brothers was very soon recognizable as their own.
Their fame reached its height in the 1920s and 30s, as they created exquisite pieces of costume jewelry and scent bottles. Their most famous works today are the Egyptian revival pieces often with scarab beads, produced in several sizes and a tremendous range of colors. They also produced a great many other pieces incorporating Egyptian Revival, Chinoiserie, Japonisme, and Indian motifs. They supported a small local cottage industry, with locals contributing components to the jewellery. Their work is characterized by the use of beautiful Czech glass and exquisite metal filigree work.
The Neiger brothers created beauty, and delighted the world with their work. That legacy has endured.
The pendant portion is 6 inches long. The snake portion alone is 2 inches long and 1 1/8 inches wide.
