About the Item

An absolutely breathtaking enameled gemstone crescent pendant necklace from the Early Victorian (ca1850s) era! Originally an antique pin, this 18kt yellow gold and sterling silver crescent has been expertly converted into a gorgeous pendant that now hangs from a fine yellow gold chain. Three rows of graduated gemstones line the outside of the crescent, and include two rows of old Rose Cut diamonds which flank a central row of stunning natural sapphires. The 13 rich, blue sapphires are each held in a raised yellow gold prong setting and the bead set diamonds rest in an open back sterling silver setting, allowing the light to pass through and beautifully catch the light. Decorating the inside of the pendant is a gorgeous hand-painted enameled image of two angelic cherubs against a celestial background, one which is reaching for a diamond encrusted star in the sky. The vivid scene is absolutely lovely, and exhibits shades of royal blue, soft pinks and browns, metallic silver and is accented with yellow gold star motifs. The mixed metals pendant is finished with milgrain detail, delicate beaded accents, and wonderful cutouts along the edge, adding a lovely feminine touch. The modern 14kt yellow gold chain is attached to either side of the crescent, allowing it to hang slightly on an angle, adding to the celestial inspired design. The interlocking chain fastens in the back with a spring ring clasp stamped with a "14K" gold purity mark beside "ITALY." This stunning celestial pendant necklace is positively exquisite and would look wonderful worn day or night! The necklace measures 17.75" long. The crescent pendant measures approximately 1 1/2" tall, about 1 3/8" wide, and is about 1/4" thick. The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold and sterling silver setting. All of the sapphires and diamonds are intact and securely set. Given the age of the piece, the hand painted enamel image is in incredible condition, with no signs of chipping or fading. The spring ring clasp is secure and in good working condition. One of the diamonds appears to have been replaced at one point with a Single Cut diamond.
