Renaissance Cameo Pendant
Renaissance Cameo Pendant

Renaissance Cameo Pendant

Located in New Orleans, LA

The cameo at the center of this exceptional pendant is a stunning example of the art of gem engraving during the Renaissance. It likely dates to the early 17th century and features a sacrificial scene inspired by the Greco-Roman era. The central flaming altar is flanked by two figures preparing to sacrifice a ram, while a figure in a lion skin blowing horns stands in the left corner. The carver brilliantly uses the natural layers of the stone to achieve the illusion of shadow and musculature on the figures. A second, smaller cameo is set at the top of the pendant, while a myriad of multi-colored gems, pearls and enamel adorns the 18K gold setting. A large Baroque pearl suspended from an enamel dragon finishes the design, which embodies the opulence and theatricality of jewels from the Renaissance age. Cameos and intaglios were highly popular amongst wealthy connoisseurs in Renaissance Italy, and owning the finest pieces was the privilege of princes. Although they were often elaborately mounted for display alone, cameos were also frequently worn as pendants, surrounded by enameled and stone-set gold frames. Such pieces were particularly prized by the Medici and Lorraine families, many of which can now be seen at the National Archeological Museum in Florence. Very few Renaissance cameos...

Niccolò Roccatagliata (1593-1636) Nude Hercules, Lost-Wax Bronze, Venice c. 1600

Located in Galveston, TX

* PURCHASED AT CHRISTIE'S, NYC * This diminutive bronze was given **pride of place** astride massive red porphyry columns in the Chicago penthouse of famed philanthropic collectors, James & Marilyn Alsdorf, underscoring Hercules' commanding presence, even when surrounded by life-sized statuary (cf. Christie's Alsdorf Collection video of 8/18/2020 @ 0:08s - 0:10s). ORIGINAL OWNER: CHAIRMAN, ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO **1963 AIC MUSEUM LABEL & COLL. NUMBER ATTACHED!!** Nicolo Roccatagliata (c.1593 - c.1636) A Venetian Bronze Statue of Hercules 17th century, Circa 1600 Beginning his metalwork apprenticeship in Genoa at the prodigious age of 10, Nicolo Roccatagliata was a pupil of A. Groppo, later working for Tintoretto. Roccatagliata's darkly patinated bronzes of classical & religious subjects adorn the world's finest museums. Original to the artist's 17th century studio (in contrast to a proliferation of later Grand Tour copies), the present model's late Renaissance date is evinced by the variegated patination, unforced natural modeling, and archaic casting methods (which continued under his son, Sebastiano). Marked by superior rendering of the abdominal musculature & posterior flesh, a 16th century Renaissance contrapposto in Hercules' stance is counterbalanced by an evident trend towards early 17th century mannerism in the stylized treatment of the hair, beard, and eyes. While the Vienna version (provenanced by 1924) is argued by some to be the finest from Roccatagliata's workshop, Yale University's (London, 1958) has finer details. Yet, these details betray the Yale model's origins as a sophisticated product of an 18th/19th century copyist, who worked from an entirely new wax model, recast by later methods, and intricately tooled & reimagined the surface into an almost plastic patina. Still, the Vienna statue...

The Olympic Flame Centenary Coin 22 karat Yellow Gold 1992

The Olympic Flame Centenary Coin 22 karat Yellow Gold 1992

Located in Esch sur Alzette, Esch-sur-Alzette

The Olympic Flame Centenary Coin is a commemorative piece minted to celebrate the centenary of the Olympic Games. Head of Queen Elizabeth II, as at 64 years of age, wearing the royal diadem, necklace, and earrings, facing right. The coin is crafted from 22 karat yellow gold, ensuring both durability and a rich, lustrous appearance. The use of high-purity gold signifies its value and collectible status. The coin has a face value of 175 dollars, issued by Canada, marking its authenticity and legal tender status. The coin commemorates the centenary of the Olympic Flame, a symbol of the enduring spirit and tradition of the Olympic Games. The Olympic Flame represents the ideals of peace, unity, and friendship among nations. The obverse side of the coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II, a common element on Canadian currency, along with inscriptions denoting the coin’s country of origin and face value. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II," "D.G. REGINA" (by the Grace of God, Queen), "175 DOLLARS," and the year of minting, 1992. Engraver: Dora de Pédery-Hunt The reverse side features a detailed and symbolic depiction of the Olympic Flame, shown as a burning torch or flame, accompanied by several different faces reaching toward the Olympic torch. Engraver: Ago Aarand, Designer: Stewart Sherwood. On the edge there is a script in latin : citius, altius, fortius. Mint : Royal Canadian Mint of Ottawa, Canada. This coin was minted along with several countries for the International Olympic Comittee (I.O.C.) in commemoration of the centennial of the Olympics. The coin is struck with high relief, showcasing intricate details and fine craftsmanship typical of commemorative coins. The design elements are rendered with precision, highlighting both the flame's symbolic significance and the historical importance of the centenary celebration. As a limited-edition commemorative coin, the Olympic Flame Centenary Coin holds significant value for collectors, particularly those with an interest in Olympic memorabilia...

Chinese Antique Qing Carved "Mutton Fat" Nephrite Plaque Pendant Certified

Located in Northampton, MA

Elegant, rare, and dating to the late Qing period (circa 1890s), this hand-carved nearly colorless white nephrite plaque has been etched on both sides. One one, the Chinese mythological figure known as Zhang Guo Lao is depicted riding a mule. On the opposite side, a magpie sits on a branch of cherry blossoms. The magpie is associated with intelligence. The carving is breathlessly simple and excellent; the work executed -of course- without the aid of electricity or modern tools. Measuring 42.54mm x 29.92mm, the plaque has a hole drilled through the center, which is original to the piece. A silver bail is threaded through the hole and a pair of beads -black jade and coral- reside at the bottom. The jade plaque hands from a 1920s silver chain that is 32" in length. Prior to the discovery of and appreciation for the very fine green jadeite from Burma, colorless, opaque, pure white nephrite jade from the Northern mountains of China was the most revered jade; the original "imperial jade, as only members of the royal court could wear or even touch it. Most of what is commercially sold today as "mutton fat...

Large 17th Century Rosewood and Walnut Game Box for Chess, Backgammon, Checkers
Large 17th Century Rosewood and Walnut Game Box for Chess, Backgammon, Checkers

Large 17th Century Rosewood and Walnut Game Box for Chess, Backgammon, Checkers

Located in New York, NY

The scale of this excellent gaming box is as marvelous as its design and decoration. it measures an impressive 34.25" when opened for a game of backgammon. Incredibly, it also retains its wonderfully oversized 2.32" gaming pieces, thirty in all, a complete set for Backgammon, Nine Man's Morris and Checkers. One side of the exterior is composed of a chess/checkers board of Rosewood and Walnut squares. It has developed a slight waviness during the course of its three hundred plus years, making one singularly aware of the many fun games it must have hosted. The other side inlaid in the Nine Man's Morris configuration, a game mentioned by Ovid in the 8th Century AD in Ars Amatoria and by Shakespeare in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Variants of Nine Man's Morris include Shax, Kensington, Fangqi and Luk Ssut K'i. The Walnut wood richly figured and unmistakably 17th Century shows areas of contraction, giving this piece a great sense of character. The sides are of beautifully figured Rosewood with a central metal locking mechanism. The interior reveals a fabulous inlaid wood backgammon board in Rosewood with Ebony and light Fruitwood points with Fleur-de-Lis detail. Backgammon dates back to ancient Egypt where it was known as the Royal Game of Ur. The ancient Romans played a similar game, Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum, a game of twelve lines. From the 11th Century onward, we find mention of variants of backgammon played in the Royal courts of Persia and Europe. It became a favorite game of gamblers and was prohibited by Louis IX in 1254 among his court officials and subjects. Likewise in the 16th Century, Elizabethan laws and church regulations prohibited the game, but by the 18th Century, it became a popular pastime once more. The dating, scale and craftsmanship of this gaming box suggest that it would have been created for personal use in a noble household. Together with thick, tooled hand stitched leather dice rollers, two large wood dice...
