Golden South Sea Pearls Overview South Sea pearls are cultivated in Pinctada maxima, the largest pearl-producing oyster. Pinctada maxima is extremely rare in nature, only found in deep ocean habitats or grown in hatcheries. A defining characteristic of Pinctada maxima is the white, silver, or golden lip of the oyster, which often indicates the color of the pearl it will produce. Coupled with their sensitivity to environmental factors, the farming of South Sea pearls is a challenging and risky venture, which is reflected in their price. They must reach 3-4 years of age before they can be seeded to produce a pearl, the longest duration for any cultured pearl. In contrast, freshwater pearls only take up to 6 months, while Akoya and Tahitian take under 2 years to grow. Each oyster usually only produces a single pearl; however, some oysters are able to be seeded twice. Their large size, limited culturing area, and extended growth period combine to make South Sea pearls the rarest of all pearl types. Found in colors ranging from optic white and champagne to deep gold, these pearls are prized by collectors and designers alike. Their luster, whether white or golden, is soft and luxurious. Golden South Sea pearls are among the rarest and most sought-after pearls in the world. Only 10-30% of each harvest will be round or near-round.
