About the Item

A 14 karat yellow and white gold Morganite and Diamond ring. The oval Morganite weighing 7.91 carats and accented by a halo of 16 round diamonds weighing 1.92 carats. The diamonds are G-H in color and SI in clarity. Size 6 and 3/4 14 Karat yellow and white gold At first glance, our Morganite ring, featuring a diamond halo set in 14 karat yellow gold, may seem like a perfect cocktail ring and nothing more. Yet, in fact, this ring tells a crucial part of the Princeton story as well as the story of the pioneering spirit that dominated the American gemological scene in the early years of the twentieth century. If the name “Morganite” sounds rather unscientific, that is because this perpetually blushing variety of beryl was named after John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan, the preeminent American banker and philanthropist of his time. Of course, Morgan himself was far too busy to make time for the discovery of rare and precious gems, so the stone was named in his honor by one of his closest friends, George Kunz. In the rush for ever more exotic varieties of gems that characterized the jewelry scene in the early 1900s, Pink Beryl, as it was originally called, was discovered in Madagascar in 1910. The first gemologist to possess the stone was George Kunz, chief gemologist of Tiffany & Co. at the time. Kunz and Morgan had crossed paths with frequency as Morgan was possibly the single biggest American collector of gemstones at the time, in addition to being one of the largest donors to the American Museum of Natural History and that institution’s peer in Paris. As the head of Tiffany’s venerable gem buying arm, then, flattering Mr. Morgan with this gift of recognition was an easy decision to make.
