About the Item
A stunning, fine and impressive antique 2.30ct black opal and 18k yellow gold cameo ring; part of our diverse antique opal jewellery and estate jewelry collections.
This stunning, fine and impressive antique opal ring has been crafted in 18k yellow gold.
The rectangular setting is ornamented with a hand carved 2.30ct black opal cameo*, depicting a profile of a man in armour, bearing resemblance to centurions or the mythological hero Archilles.
The cameo is held within a plain rounded collet setting.
The trifurcating ring shoulders integrate with the main setting and blend seamlessly with the plain ring shank.
This cameo ring has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18k gold.
This impressive ring is supplied with an IDGL gemstone grading report card.
A rare black opal cameo ring in yellow gold is an evocative gift for connoisseurs of antique jewellery, equally suited to birthdays, anniversaries or as a personal heirloom of lasting significance.
* Attributed to Wilhelm Schmidt of Idar-Oberstein, this opal exemplifies the master carver's pioneering technique of using the stone's natural matrix as a contrasting ground — a method that heightens the gem's iridescence. Trained in Paris and later based in London's Hatton Garden, Schmidt's work is celebrated for elevating opal carving to an art form of sculptural subtlety. Despite his profound influence on gem carving, Schmidt rarely signed his works, lending pieces like this a quiet, almost secretive distinction.

Natural Australian 10.97ct Black Opal and Diamonds Cocktail Ring 18K Yellow Gold
By Opal Minded
Located in Sydney, AU
The gem at the centre of the "Contrarian" opal ring is an exquisitely unusual black opal (10.97ct) from Lightning Ridge in Australia. It showcases a rare natural marriage of two colour palates in one gemstone. Warm play of colours versus cold play of colours. A truly fascinating affair. With so much to show, this gem requires a simple yet defined setting. A sparkle of diamonds on the side adds a finishing touch.
