Antike Kameo Ring Bacchante Maenad Pink White Shell Silver Mount
About the Item
The good size cameo of a female follower of Dyonisios, a so called maenad was carved out of a fine pink and white shell in 1880 ca. In Roman mythologie a maenad was called a baccante, a female follower of Bacchus. The cameo, carved as a profile bust of a young woman, makes fine use of the lovely pink hues of the shell. Baccantes and Maenads were usually depicted with ivy and wine leaves woven into the swept up hair. The cameo was carved in the Naples region and certainly intended as a grand tour souvenir. The cameo is set in a solid silver mount.
The dimensions of the cameo are 2.7 x 2.3 cm.
