About the Item

A Georgian amethyst, enamel, hairwork, and yellow gold ring, comprising nine cushion shaped amethysts, glazed hairwork panel, and black enamel, in 22 karat and 18 karat yellow gold. This sentimental ring is crafted in deep hued, buttery yellow gold. The band is carved with a dedication, in relief, reading “Mary Paston OBT 24 Mar 1771 AE 20”. I believe Mary Paston to have been a member of the Paston family, of Norfolk gentry. The band is adorned with black enamel. The ring is centred around an urn, containing a glass-covered compartment, containing braided hairwork. The urn is adorned with a band of cushion shaped amethysts, with 2 further creating the base of the urn, and the final and largest creating the top of the urn. The amethysts are well matched with one another, and a deep, luxurious purple hue. The enamel has some wear, mainly to the back of the band, as would be expected with a ring of this age, the glass and amethysts have some minor chips. The ring is otherwise in great condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The head of the ring measures 14mm high, and 11.1mm wide. The band measures 1.9mm wide at the back. The ring rises 4.5mm off the finger. Ring size: UK – N.5 US – 7 EU – 54.5 mm Gross weight: 2.7g Hallmarks: none, urn tests as 18 karat gold, band tests as 22 karat gold, circa 1771

Victorian Etruscan Style 18K Gold 13ct Amethyst, Pearl & Black Enamel Bangle
Located in Staines-Upon-Thames, GB
An antique gold, amethyst, pearl and enamel bracelet set with a cabochon amethyst, one seed pearl and adorned with black enamel, crafted from 18 karat yellow gold. The high domed amethyst cabochon is a beautiful lilac hue, which appears as a deep, luxurious, purplish red when viewed from certain angles, due to the foil backing on the stone. The amethyst has been adorned with a pale, lustrous pearl, set within a gold star. Surrounding the amethyst are concentric circles, of Etruscan design, which was at the height of fashion during the mid Victorian era. Twisted rope motifs, beading and a ring of black enamel adorn the centrepiece of this bracelet. The black enamel is in incredible condition for the age of the piece. The bracelet is further engraved with an intricate fan motif. The bracelet is hinged and is secured with a study clasp. The bracelet is in good condition, with some dings and scratches, which are mainly situated at the back of the bracelet. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The most intriguing thing about this bracelet, is that the circular portion which holds the amethyst, can be undone from the bracelet. It is secured with a screw, and the circular panel can be unscrewed and removed. It may be possible that this bracelet was originally been part of a set (possibly containing a brooch fitting and a pendant necklace fitting, as well as the bracelet fitting). The amethyst could have been attached to any of these fittings, to create a multi-functional piece of jewellery. Engineering such as this, was key in the Victorian era, and much of the convertible jewellery...
